everyone knows the story of Moby Dick and Captain Ahab’s obsession with the monster; i, however, came to know this story through the lens of phenomenology, and called this song “things” in honor of Husserl’s eidetic reduction. the song is obsession, is shipwreck, is relationality.

i believed that my song “things” captured the essence of Ahab’s relation with Moby Dick, obviously not the narrative of Moby Dick. the narrative of the song is more about obsessive tendency and what these things mean; not what they are, but how they are: how they hold us and how they can circumvent other experiences from showing themself

the chorus “all of the things that you are i can’t forget all of the things that you are i can’t forget”
and i like playing around with the meaning of this section by moving the comma, changing where the phrase starts, etc. it sends me somewhere and it references one of my favorite jazz standards of jerome kern/Oscar Hammerstein “All the things you are” – here played by keith jarret trio, sigh…so wish i was up there with those cats! and so, movement of the comma, as I was saying 😉

so what you will do with that, i have no idea, haha, but it often intrigues me to contemplate it with just a small shift of perspective. i really love ahab. i love his intensity and unequivocal vengeance. the only way to rid the obsession was to kill it or kill his own ego that stored the obession, or …kill both. like many Jungian opposing forces, we see the synchronicity of the duality; we can all relate to experiences of this dual nature, both invigorating and effete journeys…..obsessions leading to shipwreck…shipwreck leading to freedom… that is Ahab’s how.
so, song #3, is all about how. (and one can almost hear Icarus’ wings)
