Seal of Marine Hospital Service

i’ve been researching the history of mental health care of mariners in the US. The Marine Hospital Service was the first mandated health care institute in the US that was created to care for the needs of any river worker, boatsmen/women, any ranking. For more information, see the history pages of The MHS. Mariners were treated for disorders, delusions, disease, and recovery from disaster(shipwrecks, fires, boiler explosions). The seal is a symbol for “mariner in distress,” appropriately. I hope that their distress was tended to ethically & professionally, as the history of mental health institutions has an ominous record of experimental procedures that led to death/impairment. If the patients were indeed treated at the MHS, perhaps they stood a chance of auspicious intervention. Hoping to find out sometime soon 🙂
